This second version includes just the inner four planets and the Earths Moon. Improvements over the prototype version include a Date and Zodiac information ring on the large top gear, a Moon Phase ring fitted around the Moon and Earth, and a much improved top mechanism to support the Earth and Moon. This mechanism now features an Earth that is properly angled at 23.5 degrees, and is geared so that it continues to point in the same direction as it orbits the Sun which in turn shows why we get the changing seasons here on our little blue/green planet. The Moon also orbits the Earth 5 at degrees off the horizontal - just like the real one (in other words it rises and falls very slightly as it orbits). The top mech also has a fly wheel fitted which not only looks nice, but serves to smooth and stabilise the mech's rotat! ion as it transits the Sun.I'm now starting a full 9 planet orrery (I'll not forget you Pluto...) as a comission piece to be ready for Christmas 2009. This will have around 45 - 50 hand cut gears, and 8 seperate layers to the base box to hold it all together.
